Giorgio Armani turns 90 – a remarkable story

The designer was born on July 11, 1934 in the industrial town of Piacenza in northern Italy. Although he grew up in poverty, he did not initially dream of a career in fashion. The young Giorgio wanted to get out of his difficult situation and decided that he would become a doctor. However, after two years of medical studies, he was drafted into the army, where he worked in a military hospital. There, having to deal with difficult cases, he interrupted his medical career.

After leaving the army, Armani took up photography and got a job as an interior decorator at Milan’s Rinascente department store. It was there that his artistic sense was noticed by designer Nino Cerruti. He spent almost ten years in his atelier. He also met his life partner, Sergio Galeotti, who persuaded him to create his own brand.

The beginnings of a career and rapid success

In 1975, Armani presented his first men’s collection, which was incredibly well received by the fashion world. The very next season a women’s collection was released, and the Armani name began to gain worldwide fame. The successes came quickly, and in 1980 the Italian designer’s clothes appeared in the movie “American Gigolo” with Richard Gere, which further boosted his popularity.

His 38th Privé collection, recently presented in Paris, was inspired by the glitter of pearls. The Italian proved that the fashion world still belongs to him. Giorgio Armani turns 90 and continues to influence the fashion world.
