The 16th edition of the Schaeffer Era Festival “The Third Current – or a new proposal in the hybrid of two styles: jazz and classical”, directed by Łukasz Czuja, will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2024 at 7 p.m. at Pin Up Studio at Nowogrodzka 84/86 in Warsaw.
In this year’s edition of “Schaeffer’s Era,” the audience is invited to participate in a multimedia happening, with the participation of prominent musicians and actors, featuring the musical works of Boguslaw Schaeffer. We will hear musical and vocal improvisations inspired by his work, combining jazz and classical music. The 16th edition of the festival was written and directed by Luke Czuj -. artistic director of the Horzyca Theater in Torun, author of more than 50 theatrical productions, musical shows, who curiously looks at how much the work of this brilliant composer and playwright can inspire contemporary artists and surprise audiences.
“Boguslaw Schaeffer – a total artist, combining the most diverse fields of art in his work – is for me one of the most outstanding representatives of the Polish avant-garde of the 1960s. Along with Tadeusz Kantor, Jozef Szajna or Wladyslaw Hasior, his literary and musical works are a huge source of inspiration. Schaeffer poses the ever-present questions about the role of art, who the contemporary artist is, how much we need the avant-garde. And what it means today, whether the experiments of yesteryear still outrage, arouse curiosity or are already just a faded echo of past fame. For me, the multimedia show The Schaeffer Era is an opportunity to face these questions, but also an opportunity to recall the work of this outstanding artist.” – Director Luke Czuj explains.
Among the performers are excellent musicians:
- Elbląg Chamber Orchestra led by a charismatic conductor Sebastian Perlowski – an artist who for years has combined both the worlds of classical music and jazz in his work,

In 2024, Boguslaw Schaeffer would have celebrated his 95th birthday. The current edition of the Schaeffer Festival is the perfect excuse to celebrate them.
“The Schaeffer Era is a project we have been organizing continuously for 16 years, reaching audiences in Poland and abroad with the works of the master Schaeffer. This year we presented a musical and theatrical performance entitled. “SChaeffer’s Deliberations” in Elblag. We also organized a workshop for children entitled “Space, Symmetry and Figures” at the Miechowice Palace in Bytom. Participants in this meeting had the opportunity to explore geometry in music, art and mathematics, inspired by the work of Boguslaw Schaeffer.” – says Krystyna Gierlowska, creative director of the Friends of the Arts Aurea Porta Foundation, and adds:The festival’s main event – a multimedia show combining the real and virtual worlds – is realized in the space of a post-industrial hall of a former Warsaw printing house. Based on original records of Schaeffer’s compositions and his graphics, an animated video storytelling space is created, creating an additional context for the actors’ improvisations and musical space. We hope to surprise the audience, as always.”
Boguslaw Schaeffer (1929 – 2019) – one of the most outstanding personalities of Polish contemporary art. Composer, playwright, music theorist, graphic designer, but above all, one of the most important representatives of the avant-garde in Polish contemporary art. He is the author of 17 books, over 400 musical compositions. He was the first in Poland to take up the genre of instrumental theater in the work “TIS MW2” (1963), written for the famous experimental Ensemble MW2. In his work, he combined the experience of a composer of contemporary music and a playwright, and created works balancing on the border between concert, performance and spectacle. In texts written for the theater (he wrote 40 dramas), he repeatedly asked questions about the role of the artist, the work of art, playing with form and undermining the seriousness and pathos of art.
