It is rare for a complete wine collection from a single location to appear on the market. It is even more unusual when that place is the cellar of a luxurious European hotel. Built over the years with the most discerning guests in mind. That is why the auction “The Cellar of a Grand European Hotel | Finest and Rarest Wines,” organized by Sotheby’s in London, was recognized as one of the most significant events in the collectible wine market even before the final bidding began.

Only 63 lots have been put up for sale. And each of them represents the world’s elite. The catalog features legendary Burgundies, iconic wines from Bordeaux, and rare large-format bottles that are exceptionally seldom seen at auctions.

What makes this sale unique is not only the names of the producers, but above all the origin of the entire collection. All the wines come from a single hotel cellar. That’s why they have been stored for years in professional conditions and have a documented history. In the world of collectible wines, this is one of the most important factors affecting the value of a bottle.

Such collections appear extremely rarely. Much more often, auction houses offer individual lots from various owners. Here, buyers can be sure that the entire collection has been stored under identical, controlled conditions.

What wines are available for purchase?

The auction catalog resembles a list of the greatest icons in the world of winemaking. Two names dominate above all – Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Leroy. Both are regarded as producers of the most sought-after Burgundies in the world.

Among the wines on display were, among others:

  • Romanée-Conti 1990 and 1996,
  • La Tâche from the vintages 1969, 1985, 1990, and 2002,
  • Richebourg,
  • Grands Échézeaux,
  • Romanée-Saint-Vivant,
  • Chambertin,
  • Clos de la Roche,
  • Latricières-Chambertin.

These are labels that have been reaching record prices for years and are among the most sought-after by collectors.

There was no shortage of Bordeaux legends

Bordeaux wine enthusiasts will also find true gems. The catalog includes, among others:

  • Pétrus 1970,
  • Pétrus 1986,
  • Pétrus 1988,
  • Pétrus 2004,
  • Château Haut-Brion 1989,
  • Château Mouton Rothschild 1995.

Particular attention is drawn to the lot of twelve bottles of Pétrus from the 1970 vintage, one of the most highly regarded labels in the world.

The uniqueness of the auction is also highlighted by the large bottle formats. In addition to standard bottles, you can bid on Magnums, Imperials, and the extremely rare Methuselahs with a capacity of six liters.

Such editions are produced in limited quantities. That’s why they often end up exclusively in the finest restaurants or private cellars. Today, they are among the most sought-after collector’s items.

The most expensive lots reach tens of thousands of pounds

The highest-priced sets cost as much as £60,000–£80,000. Meanwhile, individual bottles of Romanée-Conti are valued by experts at £15,000. However, these high prices are no surprise. After all, we are talking about wines that have long been considered the absolute elite of the global wine industry.

Why were collectors waiting specifically for this auction?

In the luxury wine market, it’s not just the producer or vintage that matters. Equally important is the history of a specific bottle and the way it has been stored. In this case, all elements come together to create an exceptional offering – outstanding provenance, excellent condition, and a collection assembled by one of the most prestigious places in Europe.

For many collectors, it is precisely these types of auctions that hold the greatest value. It’s not just about acquiring a rare wine, but about the opportunity to obtain a bottle with a history that can never be repeated.

An auction that will go down in the history of the wine market

The exceptional wine auction at Sotheby’s is an event that goes far beyond a standard sale of collectible spirits. It is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to acquire wines from one of the most exclusive hotel cellars in Europe—a collection built over the years, composed exclusively of the most outstanding names in the world of winemaking.

It is precisely the combination of legendary producers, exceptional provenance, and extremely rare bottles that makes the London auction already regarded as one of the most exciting events in the collectible wine market in 2026.
