Dior takes the stage. The French fashion house is embarking on a two-year collaboration with A24, one of the most distinctive independent film studios. What are Dior and A24 doing together? An important address will be New York’s Cherry Lane Theatre. This is a historic off-Broadway venue. It is a meeting place for fashion, film, theater, and performance art.
This is not another fashion campaign or classic sponsorship. Dior and A24 want to jointly develop film, theater, and artistic projects. That’s why they are inviting both established creators and a new generation of artists to collaborate. The program will also include initiatives aimed at students and young talents. And although the idea seems beautiful, philanthropic, and in line with the brand’s DNA, questions about intentions do arise in the background. Is this support, or is it marketing in a sophisticated form?
Dior and A24. The first act at Cherry Lane
The collaboration began with “Both Ends”, a performance featuring performer and cabaret artist Justin Vivian Bond, directed by Zack Winokur. The project is inspired by the poet and playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay, who is connected to the history of Cherry Lane Theatre.
The costumes are designed by Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Dior. Among others, an archival design by Paul Poiret appears on stage—a designer whose creations were worn by Millay. In this way, Anderson connects the history of New York theater with the legacy of fashion and Dior’s contemporary vision.
This is no accidental meeting. Anderson has been moving between fashion, art, and performance for years. Meanwhile, his relationship with Justin Vivian Bond dates back to the designer’s time at Central Saint Martins.
More than fashion
Cherry Lane Theatre, operating since 1924 in Greenwich Village, has pursued artistic experimentation from the very beginning. Today, under the care of A24, it is once again becoming a place where different fields of culture come together.
For Dior, collaboration means delving even deeper into the world of film and art. For A24, it’s an encounter with one of the most important fashion houses and its archive. Their common language is to be creativity, not traditional brand communication.
And that’s exactly what makes this project particularly interesting. Dior not only draws inspiration from art. This time, it wants to take part in its creation.
For the next two years, Cherry Lane Theatre will be one of the venues where fashion, cinema, and theater come together on a single stage. The first act has already begun. Dior and A24 are embarking on a joint journey—where will it lead them?
